The Bridgeport Police Department is targeting tax scofflaws who illegally register their vehicles outside of the City of Bridgeport or fail to register their vehicles in the City within 3 months of beginning residency. This is a high priority issue for the Mayor and CitiStat Panel.
The Bridgeport Police Department has already started issuing the following warning:
"Connecticut General Statutes, Chapter 203" requires that Motor Vehicles registered in other states but "housed or garaged" in Connecticut for 3 months are taxable in our state, and must be declared as personal property annually; and that failure to declare subjects the owner to penalties and multiple year assessments, and will result in the issuance of an infraction notice. If you are living in Bridgeport, Connecticut please register your MV with the State of CT as required by law per (including but not limited to C.G.S. §14-12 and §14-12a), immediately!
Tax scofflaws are city residents whose vehicles are registered either out of state or in another Connecticut city or town. Tax scofflaws are breaking the law and are not paying their fair share of taxes to the City. Tax scofflaws cause higher taxes for the honest residents of Bridgeport.
Please alert your friends, family and neighbors if you know someone who is in violation of this law. Or you also can make an anonymous report by submitting a service request through BConnected, the City’s web-based customer service system. Click on “BConnected” at the top right of the home page and submit a service request titled “Report Tax Scofflaws” located under the category “Tax Issues.”
