A Building permit is required for work done on building or other structures. Some types of work requiring building permits include additions, alterations, repairs, change of use, moving a lot line, or adding a swimming pool.
Specific work is EXEMPT from any Building permit.
NOTE: No permit will be issued by the Building Department if there are outstanding property tax or WPCA collections. Contact the Building Department two (2) days prior to filing permit for verification purposes.
Supporting Documentation:
- A completed application with an original signature (in ink). Fill in non-shaded areas only.
- Two (2) complete sets of plans and specifications PLUS one (1) additional Plot Plan (for a total of 3 Plot Plans):
- Architect or Engineer seal and signature required per State Building Code, Section 107.6.
- Include when applicable: description of use, type of construction, dimensions of all elements, room names, door and window sizes, ceiling heights, materials used, fire resistance ratings with tested design sources, proposed grades, and accurate boundary lines with all existing and proposed structures.
- For ALL construction, provide a list of all contractors hired to work at site, and current copies of their Worker’s Compensation coverage (or the signed affidavit form). A copy of Home Improvement Contractor’s Registration or New Home Contractor license as required by law.
- All applicable required approvals prior to applying for the Building Permit, such as:
- Zoning Compliance and Zoning approvals
- Federal, State or Historic District permits
- Business Operating Licenses (Health Department)
- Sewer Connections (WPCA, Engineering Department)
- Flood Elevations (Engineering Department)
- Fire Code Compliance (Fire Marshal’s Office)
Note: Fire Marshall approval not required for 1 & 2 family dwellings, garages, sheds and above ground pools.
- Lead Prevention (Health Department)
- Special Inspection Statements as required by State Building Code, Sections 1704 and 1705;
- Statement of Special Inspections – Code CASE Form 101
- Final Report of Special Inspections – Code CASE Form 102
Temporary Tent
A Building Permit is required for most Temporary Tents. Please contact the Building Department (building@bridgeportct.gov) for more information.
NOTE: Building Permits for Temporary Tents are valid for a period of 90 days from date of issue
Allow at least 7-10 days for issuance of permit.
Supporting documentation required for a Building Permit for a Temporary Tent:
- All items mentioned above for a Building Permit
- Certificate of fire retardant for tent membrane
- Include location where tent(s) will be erected on the Plot Plans
- Name of tent erection company; including
- Copy of their Worker’s Compensation coverage (or the signed affidavit form)
- Required approvals prior to applying for the Building Permit, including
- Fire Code Compliance (Fire Marshal’s Office)
- Food Handling Permit (Health Department)
- Zoning Compliance
- Engineering
Swimming Pool
A Building Permit for Swimming Pool is needed for any pool which is deeper than 24 inches. Prefabricated pools which are less than 24 inches deep are exempt from requiring a permit.
