The Office of the Civil Service Commission serves as the central Personnel office for the City of Bridgeport. We provide service to the general public and the employees of the City of Bridgeport.
RULES OF THE CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION
SERVICES PROVIDED:
- Hiring for City of Bridgeport Departments
- Administration of pension plan for Civil Service and Fire employees under the Municipal Employees Retirement System (MERS)
- Payroll administration and verification
- Classification of positions and job descriptions
- Administration of Chapter 17 of the Charter of the City of Bridgeport
- Compliance with State and Federal laws with regard to employment
COMPETITIVE VS. NON-COMPETITIVE EMPLOYMENT:
Classified positions with the City of Bridgeport are divided into two divisions, competitive and non-competitive. Non-competitive positions are not tested; there is no official examination process. Generally, we will collect resumes and/or applications and hold interviews for these positions. Competitive positions are mandated by the City's Charter and in most cases, exams are given.
