Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1): What You Need to Know
Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) commonly known as H5N1, is highly contagious among birds, the risk to humans remains low, and no human cases have been reported in Connecticut to date.
What to Do if You Find Sick or Dead Birds
If you encounter sick or dead birds, it’s crucial to report them promptly to help monitor and contain the spread of HPAI.
- For Domesticated Birds (such as chickens) Contact the CT Department of Agriculture: Call 860-713-2505 or email ctstate.vet@ct.gov.
- For Wild Birds Contact the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP): If you see several dead birds (>5) in one location or notice that several birds die in the same area over the course of several days, in addition to filling out this form, please call the DEEP Wildlife Division at 860-424-3011.
Protecting Birds and Yourself
HPAI can spread quickly among birds, especially those with contact with wild waterfowl. Poultry owners are encouraged to follow biosecurity measures such as:
- Keeping wild birds away from poultry coops.
- Washing hands and boots before and after handling birds.
- Monitoring flocks for signs of illness (e.g., sudden deaths, sneezing, diarrhea, swelling).
Human Risk and Safety
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that H5N1 poses a low risk to humans, with no person-to-person transmission detected. Proper handling and cooking of poultry (to an internal temperature of 165°F) eliminates the virus and bacteria.
Stay Informed
Visit the USDA’s Defend the Flock website for biosecurity tips, or check the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) H5N1 webpage for updates.
By staying vigilant and reporting dead birds, we can work together to protect our flocks, wildlife, and communities.
