Mayor Ganim Issues a Second Statement Regarding the Siting Council's Decision Related to United Illuminating's Monopoles
Bridgeport, CT – Mayor Ganim expressed his disappointment with the Siting Council’s decision to table a vote on United Illuminating’s application for its monopole project that was slated to cross through the City of Bridgeport and the Town of Fairfield. Two weeks ago, the Siting Council conducted a non-binding straw poll and by a 4-2 vote held that the UI application should be denied. Dissatisfied with that proposed decision, The United Illuminating Company filed a last-minute motion with the Siting Council asking it to stay its decision on UI’s application.
Mayor Ganim has stated that now that the Council is poised to rule against it, UI has resorted to delay tactics to put off the Council’s well-reasoned proposed decision.” Mayor Ganim went on to say “The denial of UI’s application is the appropriate course of action, and while the delay on a final decision is unfortunate, we are confident that the Council will see through UI’s blatant attempt at delay and reach the right conclusion based on its prior analysis of UI’s proposal. Nothing has changed with respect to UI’s proposal, which the Siting Council has correctly noted is not an appropriate project for this area. I look forward to continuing to protect the rights of the City and its residents on these matters. Despite UI’s misrepresentations in the press, the City believes that the appropriate course of action is for United Illuminating to seriously consider a cost-effective undergrounding solution, and my administration will continue to fight for that result.”
