Program Description: The State of Connecticut law provides a reimbursement program for Connecticut renters who are elderly 65+ or older or totally disabled, and whose income does not exceed certain limits. Persons renting an apartment or room, or living in cooperative housing may be eligible for this program. The rebate can be up to $900 for married couples and $700 for single persons.
The Renters rebate amount is based on a graduated income scale and the amount of rent and utility payments (excluding telephone/cable) made in the calendar year prior to the year in which the renter applies.
Applications can be filled with the Department on Aging, Eisenhower Senior Center.
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- To apply all applicants must be age 65 years old or older or Totally Disabled receiving Social Security disability benefits, by December 31st, 2021.
- Must be a Connecticut resident for at least one year prior to filing for renters rebate, and currently renting during the filing period.
- Maximum annual income threshold is: $46, 400 for married couples or $38,100 for single individuals.
Applicants need to bring the following when applying:
- Rent receipts or a letter from the landlord stating the portion of rent paid during the calendar year 2021.
- Annual gross income statement(s) - Social Security, SSI, SSDI, Railroad retirements, pension(s), W2 wages, federal income tax filings, alimony, annuities, unemployment, workers’ compensation, veteran’s benefits, jury duty payments, IRA taxable distributions, Black Lung, / Green thumb payments, Interest, dividends, Lottery winnings, Legal settlements, Cancellation of Debt, and Anthem sale of stock.
- Utilities Expenses (electricity, gas, water)
- Proof of Disability (current TPQY, Social Security Disability Award letter)
- Veterans under 65 years old, deemed 100% disabled must provide an approval letter from Social security disability, and other income statements.
- Married couples must provide all income statements regardless of living arrangements, including a copy of their marriage certificate.
