Sidewalk, Curb, and Driveway Apron

WHO CAN APPLY:  Only licensed and bonded contractors with the city of Bridgeport may apply for a Sidewalk, Curb, and Driveway Apron permit. The city will not accept expired documents. Permit fee is 75 dollars.

Things you will need and requirements:

  • Exact address of work/Cross street/ Near side or far side of St./Type of work/Linear feet of excavations/ Cbyd reference Number/Traffic Plans must be submitted/ Date of work/
  • You must reach out to the permits Department to schedule pre inspection and post inspection.
  • You must contact the overtime police office to schedule officers for traffic control.
  • You may only use certified flaggers when you attempt to call overtime office and they do not have officers available. 

Traffic plans must include:  

  • The traffic plan must show a legend for all symbols being used.  As well as road and pedestrian plan when blocking both street and sidewalk .Show the position of all traffic control devices required, spacing of such devices and other critical dimensions such as width of pedestrian walkways, travel lanes, work area. 
  • Roads may not be closed unless granted by public facilities.

Requirements for sidewalk work:

  • SUB-BASE Preparation - The surface shall be stripped of all loam, muck, old pavement, organic and other objectionable material. All soft and spongy places shall be removed and shall meet CT DOT Form 817 Article M.02 requirement. Sub-base shall be thoroughly compacted in layers not exceeding six (6) inches in thickness. Material for sidewalk subgrade shall meet the requirement of section M.03.02 for Class C Concrete
  • Forms shall be free from warp and of sufficient strength to resist springing out of shape.
  • All wood forms shall be thoroughly wetted and metal forms oiled with non staining oil before depositing any material against them. All mortar and dirt shall be removed from forms that have been previously used. Forms shall remain in place until the concrete has thoroughly hardened but the dividing plates shall be removed promptly after the concrete is of sufficient hardness to prevent slabs from flowing together.
  • A one-half (12) inch joint shall be provided once every twenty (20) feet, which shall be filled up to one-half (12) inch below the surface of the walk with suitable material. All construction and expansion jointing shall extend to the bottom of the concrete and radial joints shall be installed on curved walks. A similar joint shall be provided at each intersection of sidewalk and street curb and each intersection of sidewalk with concrete driveway. Sidewalks shall be separated from abutting buildings by a one-half (1/2) inch joint.
  • Sidewalks should be 5 inch thick, or match neighboring concrete.
  • Sidewalks must be broom Finished.
  • Cylinder testing for concrete may be required for sidewalk work at the expense of the contractor. 

Driveway Aprons:

  • Driveway aprons must be 8 inches thick.
  • Driveway aprons require wire mesh.
  • Driveway aprons must be poured with class c concrete. 

ADA Handicap Ramps:

  • All ramps must follow dot standards.
  • When sidewalk work encompasses a corner, contractor shall comply with state of Connecticut public act no.77-385 concerning handicap ramps. 
  • Any contractor working on a corner where a traffic signal light controls will inform engineering department before demolitions of sidewalk.
