We provide this information to the Bridgeport community to aid in the understanding of current health issues and to allow residents to make informed decisions regarding their health.

Respiratory Infections
COVID-19
COVID-19 is an illness cause by SARS-CoV-2 virus first detected in 2019. This highly contagious disease has spread quickly and resulted in a worldwide pandemic. COVID-19 most often causes a respiratory illness but can also attack other parts of your body and lead to serious illness, hospitalization, or even death. As asymptomatic individuals can transmit this virus it is important to maintain surveillance on this disease to monitor community risk levels. Influenza
Influenza (flu) is a respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. This contagious disease can cause mild to severe symptoms that may require hospitalization. Seasonal flu activity is generally the highest between October and April, but influenza viruses circulate year-round. Bridgeport Health Department utilizes multiple surveillance systems to track how this year’s flu season is progressing. From October – December 2022, Health and Social Services employees surveyed the Bridgeport homeless population to gather information and inform future support programs.

The Bridgeport Health Department participates in the Health Improvement Alliance along with other local health departments, hospitals, and healthcare providers to assess the needs of the community and creation actionable plans to improve public health.
