Born in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, Councilmember Ernest Newton moved to Bridgeport at an early age. He graduated from Harding High School and holds a BA in Music Education from Winston – Salem State University. In 1981, Newton was elected to the Bridgeport City Council, becoming the youngest member at age 25 and the first Black person on the council. He was elected to the State House of Representatives in 1989 and later became a State Senator, serving in the state for seventeen years. Newton is the Director of the Bridgeport Re-Entry Welcome Center at Career Resources. He is a current member of the Mount Aery Baptist Church and the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc, and a member of Prince Hall Freemasonry.
